Under the bright Roman sun on Sunday, May 18, 2025, St. Peter’s Square was filled with tens of thousands of faithful from around the world, gathered to witness the solemn and historic Mass of Inauguration for the new Pope, Leo XIV. The massive colonnades of Bernini framed the sea of pilgrims waving flags, holding rosaries, and praying as choirs filled the air with sacred hymns.
At the heart of the liturgy, a deeply symbolic moment unfolded. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, approached the new Pontiff, standing before the altar in white and gold vestments. With reverence and emotion, he presented Pope Leo XIV with the Ring of the Fisherman — a gold signet ring engraved with an image of Saint Peter casting his net, symbolizing the Pope’s role as successor to the Apostle and spiritual shepherd of the global Church.
As the ring was placed on his finger, Pope Leo XIV bowed his head in prayerful silence, before turning to bless the assembly. The square erupted in applause and cheers, a testament to the hope and renewal that a new papacy brings. The newly elected Pope then proceeded with the Eucharistic celebration, his voice steady and serene as he delivered his first homily as the Bishop of Rome.
