Former Zambia’s President Edgar Chagwa Lungu Dies At 68

Pretoria, South Africa — Zambia is in mourning following the death of former President His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 68. The late statesman died at Mediclinic Medforum in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had been receiving medical care for several weeks.

The news was confirmed by his daughter, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, in a solemn statement released via the Patriotic Front’s official social media channels.

President Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth Republican President from 2015 to 2021, was remembered as a pivotal figure in the nation’s modern political landscape. Born on November 11, 1956, in Ndola, Lungu rose from humble beginnings to hold the highest office in the land, initially assuming leadership following the untimely death of President Michael Sata.

After winning a full mandate in the 2016 general election, Lungu led Zambia through a period marked by both economic challenges and infrastructure expansion. His tenure was also noted for increasing Chinese investment and significant debate over democratic practices.

In the 2021 election, he was succeeded by current President Hakainde Hichilema. After a brief retreat from political life, Lungu made a return to the political arena in 2023, spearheading an opposition alliance. However, in December 2024, Zambia’s Constitutional Court declared him ineligible for a third term, citing constitutional limits.

Despite legal setbacks, Lungu remained a key voice in the nation’s political discourse until his death.

Dr. Lungu is survived by his wife, former First Lady Esther Lungu, and their six children. Plans for his funeral and national memorial are expected to be announced by the government in the coming days.

Across the country, flags have been lowered to half-mast, and tributes have poured in from world leaders and citizens alike. A legacy of leadership, controversy, and resilience marks the passing of a man who shaped Zambia’s democratic journey in the 21st century.
